Abstract

This article examines the main trends and evolution of machine translation technologies, specifically focusing on the linguistic and technological characteristics of statistical machine translation (SMT), rule-based machine translation (RBMT), and direct machine translation. It highlights the reliance of direct machine translation on lexical units and bilingual dictionaries, as well as the mechanism of transforming source language units into the target language without an intermediate representation. Furthermore, the article analyzes lexical inconsistencies, syntactic errors, and semantic ambiguities that arise from this approach's failure to adequately account for syntactic and semantic relationships.
