THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHAIC EPIC TRADITIONS IN THE 'LORD OF THE RINGS' NOVEL

This research analyzes how the archaic epic traditions are preserved in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel "The Lord of the Rings" and how they develop within the framework of modern fantasy literature. The work explores the mythological structures characteristic of ancient epic thought, heroic archetypes, the dichotomy of "good vs. evil," themes of fate and trial, as well as the artistic functions of epic style (monumental depiction, pathos, and the illusion of historicity). The plot and character system of the novel are examined in conjunction with German-Scandinavian epics, folk oral traditions, and legendary narratives, establishing that Tolkien creates a new, systematic mythopoetic world through the reinterpretation of epic heritage. As a result, "The Lord of the Rings" is assessed as a work that ensures the continuity of epic traditions while enriching them with modern aesthetic criteria, genre demands, and artistic concepts.
