PROBLEMS OF PRESERVING THE ORIGINAL IN THE TRANSLATION OF LITERARY IMAGERY AND EXPRESSIVE DEVICES: A CASE STUDY OF E.M. REMARQUE’S NOVEL THE WAY BACK

This article addresses the challenges of preserving literary imagery and expressive devices in the translation of works of fiction. Using the first chapter of E.M. Remarque’s novel The Way Back (German original, and its Russian and Uzbek translations) as a case study, it examines theoretical aspects of literariness, imagery, and linguistic means, as well as practical strategies and transformations employed by translators to achieve equivalence and adequacy. The study identifies key difficulties in conveying culture-specific realia, idiomatic expressions, and emotional-stylistic nuances, illustrating the inherently compromise-based nature of literary translation.
