Abstract

The article examines the theoretical foundations and practical methodology of developing students’ conceptions of geometric shapes in mathematics education. The structure of geometric conceptions, the van Hiele levels of geometric thought and Fischbein’s theory of figural concepts are analysed. A four-stage methodological model (sensory-practical, analytical-classificatory, visual-dynamic and applied-reflective stages) is proposed. The use of natural objects (fruits, vegetables, leaves) and hands-on handling of constructed models is described, together with other didactic tools (tangram, geoboard, origami, GeoGebra, national ornaments), diagnostic tasks and assessment criteria.
