This article analyzes issues related to expanding the functional capabilities of polymer-based membranes using nanomaterials. Problems commonly associated with traditional polymer membranes—such as hydrophobicity, susceptibility to fouling, biofilm formation, and, in some cases, insufficient mechanical stability—are examined from the perspective of nanomodification. The mechanisms by which titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, silver nanoparticles, graphene oxide, and carbon nanotubes interact with the polymer matrix are outlined. The analysis indicates that the efficiency of the nanocomposite structure depends more on the uniform distribution of the nanomaterial within the polymer and the stability of interfacial interactions than on the quantity of nanomaterial added. Additionally, the risks of nanoparticle agglomeration and leaching from the membrane are highlighted as key issues for future research.
