COIL AND VIRTUAL EXCHANGE AS TOOLS FOR INTERNATIONALIZATION AT HOME IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

This thesis examines the pedagogical potential of COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) and Virtual Exchange as instruments of internationalization at home in higher education. Particular attention is given to providing international and intercultural learning experiences for students who are unable to participate in academic mobility programs for various reasons. The study explores the main stages of designing COIL sessions, organizing international online collaboration, and assessing students’ competencies. The experimental work was conducted with students from three higher education institutions, allowing the educational potential of COIL and Virtual Exchange to be examined in an authentic academic context. The findings indicate that these technologies can contribute to the development of students’ intercultural communication, collaborative learning, teamwork, and global competencies. Based on the findings, practical recommendations are proposed for integrating COIL and Virtual Exchange into university courses and for preparing academic staff to effectively implement these technologies in the educational process.
