DEPICTION OF NATIONAL CHARACTER AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT IN CLASSICAL REALISM: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE NOVELS “HARD TIMES” AND “KECHA VA KUNDUZ”

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the artistic portrayal of national character and social environment in two major works of English and Uzbek classical realism: Charles Dickens’s *Hard Times* and Abdulhamid Cholpon’s *Kecha va Kunduz* (Night and Day). It demonstrates how both works—grounded in the principles of realistic depiction—explore social relations at specific historical stages, the individual's connection to their environment, value systems, personal freedom, and the impact of social pressure. Despite the historical and cultural differences between the industrialized England depicted by Dickens and the early 20th-century Turkestan portrayed by Cholpon, the study argues that the shaping of character under the influence of social conditions serves as a crucial unifying poetic feature of both novels.
