Abstract

The article examines the features of the representation of traumatic memory in the novel “The Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro. The main focus is placed on the strategies of silence and repression through which the narrative and the protagonist’s subjectivity are constructed. The analysis demonstrates that traumatic experience in the text is not expressed directly, but manifests itself through gaps, displacements, and narrative ruptures. It is concluded that silence functions not only as an artistic device, but also as a mode of the protagonist’s existence within his own memory.
