This thesis covers the theoretical foundations of the formation of communication competencies in students on the basis of the ESP (English for Specific Purposes) approach in higher education. The study combines classical linguodidactic views on communicative competence and concepts of profession-oriented language education. It was substantiated that within the framework of ESP, “language” is interpreted not only as a set of lexical and grammatical units, but also as a means of performing tasks, justifying decisions, coordinating cooperation, and demonstrating professional identity in a specific professional community. As a result, a theoretical model for operationalizing communicative competences for ESP courses was proposed: the integral relationship between needs analysis, genre and discourse-oriented content, task-based interactive teaching, and activity-based assessment was shown to be a prerequisite for competence development. The conclusions of the thesis emphasize the need to strengthen the correspondence between professional communicative situations, discourse norms, and assessment criteria in the design of ESP courses.
