The 1960s and 1970s saw the rapid development of sociolinguistics, a new interdisciplinary field that emerged at the intersection of linguistics and a number of related disciplines—sociology, social psychology, and ethnography. Numerous monographs, collections of articles, and periodicals, including international ones, are devoted to the problems of sociolinguistics. They are discussed at specialized seminars, symposia, conferences, and international congresses of linguists and sociologists. Interest in sociolinguistic issues is entirely natural. On the one hand, it is driven by the needs of modern society, which urgently needs scientifically developed principles of language policy and language construction. On the other, it is a distinctive reaction to the intralinguistic orientation of structural linguistics, which excluded social context from consideration. The term "sociolinguistics," the most widely used in modern scholarship, was first used in 1952 by the American sociologist H. Curry. This term designated a field that already existed and saw its primary goal as the study of language as a social phenomenon.
