TYPOLOGY OF TRANSLATION TRANSFORMATIONS AND THEIR IMPACT ON ARTISTIC QUALITY: A CASE STUDY OF ERICH MARIA REMARQUE’S NOVEL THE WAY BACK

The article examines the typology of translation transformations and their impact on preserving artistic quality in literary translation, using Erich Maria Remarque’s novel The Way Back as a case study. It explores the theoretical foundations of the concepts of “artistic quality,” “artistic image,” and “linguistic artistry,” as well as the challenges of conveying imagery and expressive devices in translation. The study is based on a comparative analysis of the German original and its Russian and Uzbek translations, identifying specific cases of lexical substitution, additions, omissions, permutations, compensation, and analogical translation. Special attention is paid to the effect of these transformations on the emotional-stylistic perception of the text and the pragmatic impact of the translation. The findings show that the translator’s choice of strategies and techniques depends on the need to balance form, content, and cultural adaptation, and they confirm the inevitability of compromise in preserving the artistic value of a work.
