The Seljuk sultans, emirs, and beys accomplished great deeds as patrons of science, literature, and art. Among them, the early Seljuk rulers—particularly Malikshah, Sanjar, and Nizam al-Mulk—held a highly significant place in the history of culture. Many scholars, philosophers, mathematicians, physicians, artists, writers, and poets were associated with the Seljuk courts, studying under their patronage or in institutions they had endowed. It is known from their names, autobiographies, and sometimes their countries of origin that the majority of these scholars were of Turkic descent. In addition to establishing madrasas and cultural centers, Sultan Malikshah donated 300,000 dinars (gold coins) annually to scholars and Sufi mystics.
